The Immigration Thing

Okay, the entire blogosphere is up in arms over Dubya's new immigrant policy proposal. Many bloggers have already said a lot more about it than I could, and in a much more effective way.

Therefore, I just want to cover one thing Bush said. Only one:

I propose a new temporary worker program that will match willing foreign workers with willing American employers when no Americans can be found to fill the jobs.

THIS. IS. NOT. RIGHT.

When no Americans can be found to fill the jobs? What about all these people who are complaining about unemployment? Why does he want to give jobs to people who are BREAKING THE LAW instead of giving them to AMERICAN CITIZENS?

Dubya, if you don't move back to the right pretty soon, you've lost my vote.

I'm serious.

There are out of work steel workers who'd rather get unemployment than work at McDonalds. SOMEBODY has to fry the McNuggets....

There are jobs that americans will not fill. Most that americans will not fill is in rule america. My father lasted a whole 2 days in a beef processing plant that the majority of works are immigrants (some illegal). He just couldn't hack it and went into retial.

I live in an area that 30% are latino and a good 7 or 8% of those are not here legally. If we lost that workforce it would hurt the whole community. There are other issue that do worry me about immagration, but the Job deal is just Pat Bucanan (sp?) scare tatics.

Okay, I did write a response to this, but it didn't get posted for some reason. Basically, I think that we should at least try to give jobs to American citizens before we give illegal aliens amnesty. I don't necessarily think that illegals are responsible for unemployment, as some do.

I just think that we should make jobs available to legal citizens, and only use this approach as a last resort. Plus, this makes illegal aliens seem even less...well, illegal. We have to stop treating them like lost puppies.

It does seem like a pointless waste of time and money--what illegal is going to trust the gov't enough to sign up anyway? Because they ARE criminals, since they are here illegally, and you just need one person to get a clue and use the list to deport folks......
