Are floss companies paying dental hygienists to pimp their products? It seems like every time I go in there, everyone is extolling the virtues of floss.
"Are you flossing? Your gums are irritated, so you must not be flossing! You have to floss at least once a day, you know. And brush your teeth about five times an hour. Otherwise, you'll get gingivitis. FLOSS!!!"
Yeah, that was a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm half expecting to go in there next time and hear:
"Are you flossing? You need to floss! If you don't floss, you'll get cancer! Floss is the only way to stop it! Floss will be your best friend! Floss can win the War on Terror!!! FLOSS WILL MAKE YOU IMMORTAL!!!! FLOSS! IS! GOD!!!!!"
...Hmmm...I think I got carried away again.
At least they didn't play Van Morrison this time. Friggin' hippies.
Posted by CD on June 22, 2004 04:38 PMI have floss. I look at it every night and think..."Damn, I should floss" Yeah, but it only happens like once or twice a week because damnit I have a dentist. I'm paying her to keep my teeth up to par.
Posted by: The Sicilian at June 23, 2004 12:40 PMI've seen my parents go through way too much in the way of oral surgery due to not flossing. Floss IS my friend.
Posted by: Katherine at June 23, 2004 02:33 PMI used to always nod and smile when the dentist or hygienist said I should floss. But I never would. Then it gradually became "hey, if you'd floss, you wouldn't have these cavities." Then I came to the realization that fillings suck. Floss= no cavities= no fillings= Happy Brad. But I hate floss so I use Plackers. There, I pimped a floss product, I'll be expecting a check.

Posted by: Sayel Ali at September 10, 2004 12:23 PMWhy do I tell my hygienist to recommend flossing?
Because it is one of the most cost effective preventive measure you can take to improve your oral health. Now,studies show that there is a link between poor gum health as a contributing factor to heart disease. So floss away, it's cheap and will save you big bucks down the road.
Happy flossing :)
Yes, Happy Flossing indeed. I used to never floss and I did pay for my sins. Since I started flossing, I have noticed significant changes. In fact, my dentist too notices. So much, that she asked me out on a date. I am happy to say that if not for flossing, I wouldnt be seeing a DDS outside office hours :)
