Kay, I don't know about busses so much, but in my (limited) experience with downtown Chicago, and my (extremely limited) experience with Manhattan, the train is your friend. Get yourself a map of the subway system- take ya anywhere in the freakin' city for like a buck or two. If you don't mind walking a coupla blocks to and from the train station.
