Hooray for Fitness

Thanks to consistent diet and exercise, I have now lost 53 pounds since graduating from college.

You know, just in case you were wondering.

(The sad/scary part is that I'm still about 20 pounds overweight, but I guess that's preferable to being morbidly obese)

What all were you doing, asks one who is trying to shed some poundage?

A few things have worked for me, but your results may vary.

First of all, I seriously cut down on the amount of sugar and other unhealthy stuff in my diet. I used to have a bottle of Coke or ginger ale or something with dinner every day. Now, I pretty much drink nothing but water (or Crystal Light, but that basically is water). I also started eating fruit (mostly apples) instead of sugary snack foods. I made this change after a blood test showed that I was in danger of getting diabetes if I didn't cut down, just to give you an idea of how ridiculously unhealthy I was.

As far as foods go, pretty much the only other thing I did was eat a lot less. For example, in my senior year of college, my typical lunch was something like this:

- A sandwich with several kinds of deli meat and two slices of cheese
- A large amount of french fries with extra salt and ketchup
- A buttered bagel
- Two chocolate chip cookies
- A 20 oz. bottle of Mountain Dew

Now, compare that to my typical lunch when I was doing my internship last month:

- A cinnamon muffin
- An apple
- A few sips from a bottle of water

Get the idea?

Also, I haven't eaten fast food (unless Subway counts) in almost a year.

The more important factor is probably the exercise, though. It's kind of a weird story, but during the limbo period while I was kind of looking for a job, but my brother was still being treated for his tumor, I got really bored, so I started wandering around the downstairs area of my house (basically a circle; A hallway connects to the kitchen, which connects to the dining room, which connects to the living room, which connects back to the hallway) while my parents were at work, just so I didn't have to sit at my computer all winter. It started out as just a way to change the scenery, but around the end of January, it somehow turned into exercise, and I normally spent a couple hours a day just walking around in circles and listening to podcasts. This is when the weight loss really picked up.

When it got warmer, I started actually going outside, and each day, I went a little farther and walked a little faster. This brings us to the present. My daily workout consists of 60 to 80 minutes of fairly intense walking on suburban streets. Since my street is in a valley, I have to climb one of two steep hills to get anywhere else in the neighborhood, and there are a lot of other hills in the area. One night last week, I walked for the full 80 minutes and went up three steep hills in the process. This led to painful shin splints that made it impossible to do it again for a few days, but it still felt pretty awesome to pull it off.

Any other questions?

no, no more questions. That's one hell of a result, man. Good on yah.

Any other questions?

Uh, yeah... from another who is also trying to shed some poundage...

- A sandwich with several kinds of deli meat and two slices of cheese
- A large amount of french fries with extra salt and ketchup
- A buttered bagel
- Two chocolate chip cookies
- A 20 oz. bottle of Mountain Dew

That right there is a more-or-less typical lunch for me too (currently). Minus the bagel, anyway. Uh, and the ketchup. How do you go from that to a muffin and an apple without your body screaming for its expected protein? I don't mind if my stomach grumbles at me a bit as long as I know I've gotten the nutrition I need or whatever, but seriously man, how do you function if that's all you eat?

If that sounded sarcastic at all, it wasn't meant to be. I have low blood sugar, or something like it, and if I eat light I can't frickin' get through a day. I suppose if I was really looking for answers on losing weight, I'd talk to a dietician, but c'mon. Who's smarter than CD?

Oh, and congratulations, man. 50+ pounds is frickin' awesome.

One more time for good measure: Frickin'.

Well, I also ate granola bars or Pop-Tarts for breakfast, and I always made sure to eat some kind of meat at dinner for the protein (a typical dinner was a burger and fries or a sandwich and chicken tenders), but to be honest, it did involve being hungry for a couple hours a day. I usually had lunch around 2:30, then had dinner at 6. Also, I try to control my appetite by chewing gum or eating saltines.

Just so you know, I was mostly doing this in New York because I couldn't exercise as much. Right now, I'm eating slightly more (but still only drinking water and getting my sugar from fruit), since I walk for at least an hour a day.

Incidentally, I got a few weird reactions at work when people saw how little I was eating, and CO1 almost didn't believe me when I told him I used to weigh 235 pounds, so don't worry about sounding sarcastic.

Almost forgot one thing: Eat slower, and chew your food more. It makes it seem like there's more there. My lunch may have been a muffin and an apple, but I usually took at least 15 minutes to eat them.
